MAGICAL STOCKHOLM

5-Day Magical Pilgrimage & Walkabout

Wednesday 3rd. to Sunday 7th. August 2016

MERLYNS TRAVELS with technical assistance from YOUNES REJSER

The first-time visitor to Stockholm is greeted by a regal skyline of Oz-like turrets and tarnished copper domes along Skeppsbron Quay. You discover at once that Stockholm is built on connected islands as the nucleus of Sweden's old Baltic Empire. You also discover that this region of 1.6 million people seems literally to float on 14 islands and with stunning vistas from any of the more than 50 bridges linking the islands - the effect is spectacular.

Stockholm is like a health cure - no city in the world has made the kind of investments Stockholm's made to enhance the environment. There is abundance of water and the wilderness is never far from the Stockholm doorstep. You have ancient nature parks and forests dotted across the city. Stockholm is more rural and probably more safe and sane than most European capitals. The Swedish capital, it seems, is logical and very compact. a brisk walk takes you to any corner of the city in a twinkling. A walk, a bicycle,, bus or subway ride is a matter of minutes.

Where would Copenhagen be without Strøget, the Wallking Street, or Oslo without its main street, Karl Johan - but Stockholm's heart pulse is no street - the soul of the city is to be found with Srömmen. Where the Baltic Sea meets Mälaren, a very large lake, salt water meets fresh water at Slussen. Here our magical Stockholm Adventutre begins. No wonder Stockholm is promoted with the slogan - "Beauty on Water".

And during the period we come, there is the annual Stockholm Water Festival (2-10 August) with the international firework competition to enjoy, and the Stockholm Gospel Choir Festival (7-9 Aug.) and much much more...!

But first we begin our pilgrimage in the old part of the city - Gamla Stan - and move our way up the Stockholm Chakra & Ley-line system.

"MAGICAL STOCKHOLM" - OUR 5-DAY PROGRAM

DAY 1 - Weds. 3rd. August 2016

Morning travel to Stockholm & Arlanda Airport - check-in at our centrally located Hotel. Lunchtime visit to Gamla Stan, with its cobbled lanes & its clutter of Dutch Renaissance buildings, here is where the Founding Father Birgir Jarl built the first fortifications with a financial boost from Hansa traders.. First time the city is named was 1252. Stockholm is built around a Hill and the original city walls enclosed the old part of the city, so that outside the walls was basically wild areas.

We start with a water ceremony near Slussen and then explore the atmosphere of the old city, including Storkyrkan, traditionally built by Stockholms Founding Father. The battle and defeat of the Danes in 1471 produced a rememberance to this victory as the St. George & the Dragon statue we now see in Storkykan. A cloister was established in1270 at Riddarholmskyrkan - the site of Royal tombs. Stockholm's oldest square and the old city's heart-point is Stortorget, although in 1520 eighty-two people were beheaded here!

Evening dinner & relaxation in Gamla Stan. On the veranda of The Grand Hotel, there are great views of the harbour and an excellent smorgasbord - a truely Swedish experience.

Midnight race - On 3rd. August about 15,000 racers run by night through Stockholm's south side. Time also to enjoy the Water Festival's firework display.

DAY 2 - Thursday 4th. August

Return to Gamla Stan. One of Sweden's Kings built Stockholm's strategic point - where the City Hall now stands. Morning visit to this iconic building that is normally shown as a representation of the city itself. Nearby is the Castle or Royal Palace - the official residence of the King & Queen, well worth our visit. The houses and quarters of Gamla Stan were called after the gods & goddesses from antiquity i.e. Greek & Roman names. Treasure Hunt - Time to find the different street plaques bearing such names as Juno, Hera or Venus. etc. At this stage we have explored the first 3 Chakra's of Stockholm's inner city.

Afternoon mystery boat trip to explore Stockholm's archipelago - hooray!

DAY 3 - Friday 5th. August

Today we experience two fantastic places - our morning visit to Millesgården, on Lidingö, contemporary sculpture in a wonderful garden setting - breathtaking! After lunch we go to where millions of tourist go - the unique experience of the Vasa Museum, housing the only 17th. Century warship in the world - an absolute "must see"! Vasa sank just 15 minutes into it's maiden voyage! Salvaged & wonderfully displayed, we get to walk around the decks and the entire ship - yet nothing prepares you for the hugeness of this Royal war machine that sank in Stockholm's habour because of a design flaw.

After some great intensive hours, it's time for relaxation - and we now go to Sturebadet, a beautifully restored art nouveau bath-house in central Stockholm, where you can swim, steam & sauna - and get a Swedish massage - or a mud bath!

For our Friday evening, we shall arrange a musical night out or theatre visit. Nearer the date we shall know better what is our best choice.

DAY 4 - Saturday 6th. August

After breakfast, our morning visit is to continue our Chakra Tour walkabout. Two roads mark the way out of Gamle Stan & around the original Hill of Stockholm's location - they are Drottningatan & Regeringsgatan. We follow Drottningatan all the way to the Crown of Stockholm, the Old Observatory.

Along the way we visit the cultural area around Hötorget and August Strindberg's statue in the Brow or visionary area of the city. Highest up on the hill of Kungsbaken, it was here he received the working people. He lived in what he called the Blue Tower. Writers before him tended to be very sophisticated but Stringberg wrote for the people - he was an emotional, dramatic & realistic writer, lifting the people's lives up in his life work - and they identified with him. Visit to the Stringberg Museum.

Around the corner is Stockholm's only alternative occult bookshop - Vattumannen - and if time allows, we take a quick step inside.

Where the Brow & Throat centers of Stockholm meet is where Drottningatan and Olaf Palmesgatan intersect. It was here that the much loved Swedish Prime Minister Olaf Palme was murdered - remember that event & how it changed Swedish model society?

Return to our hotel for changing clothes and early dinner.

For our final evening in Stockholm we plan a visit to the fabulous old Drottningholm Court Theatre , which dates from the 18th. Century and the original decoration is still in use today. Opera, ballet or chamber music performances during the summer.

DAY 5 - Sunday 7th. August

On our final day we shall visit Djürgården, taking the boat from Gamla Stan. Lunch in Skansen.

Before leaving, we take the Katarina lift to the top, overlooking the city from the south, and wave goodbye.

Early evening return flight from Arlanda airport.
